Barrie Parham celebrated his 79th birthday by running 5km in 27 min 29 seconds at Cwmbran Parkrun last Saturday.
He is one of the founder members of Griffithstown Harriers and has represented Wales in running.
Moments before he set off on this morning’s run at Cwmbran Boating Lake, he told Cwmbran Life what he loves about the sport and why he had done it for so long.
He said: “I just love being out in the open air and the exercise and the sort of camaraderie between the other runners, the whole scene of it.
“I like the competition too. I ran for the Welsh Masters team back in November of last year, and I was third in the 5km championship [75+ age category] in Caerphilly last weekend. And I’ve been in the Welsh cross-country team four times now, so it’s going all right.”
