Northville Community Group is well known for running trips and organising events to bring neighbours together and make the estate a nice place to live. When I heard about their latest project I was intrigued and had to go and find our more. Watch this video on how 50p Friday is helping residents save money.
Every Wednesday a group of volunteers meet at Maendy Primary School where they collect a delivery from Fareshare– a charity who save good food from going to waste.
They then put the food into packs that they sell for 50p to residents who live in Northville and parents of children at the school. Their research showed that people were often a bit short of cash towards the end of the week- so 50p Friday was born- and from 2pm each week they distribute the food.
Customers said that they often skipped buying items like washing powder as a big box is expensive. So to solve this they split up boxes of Daz into small bags that they sell for 50p.
Some of their 50p food bags include recipes and this has led to a photo competition on Facebook where customers share pics of their creations. Spices are often left out of meals due to the cost so they measure out the right amount of spices in each meal pack so customers don’t miss out on the extra flavour.
It was a well-oiled machine. I watched as the volunteers offloaded the items and ticked them off lists. The quality of the food was fantastic: minced beef, eggs, lettuces, tomatoes and courgettes were among the crates I spotted.
