The British Red Cross run a service in Torfaen and Newport to tackle loneliness. In this video watch Suzanne Parry-Price talk about how the community connectors help people who are lonely and isolated to get back out into the community.
She explains how they have helped people get the confidence to go back on a bus after a bereavement, find employment and get out of their house after feeling isolated. The staff work with someone for around three months to:
- meet new friends
- rediscover interests or find new ones
- build confidence.
During that time they aim to get someone ready and confident to carry on without the support. The service is for anyone aged over 18.
Social groups
They are setting up a weekly board game group in Cwmbran Library and a walking group in Pontypool Park. In the next few months they are also setting up a social choir where people can meet for coffee, chat and a ‘bit of sing-song’ . Contact the team to find out more.
