Visit the Windrush exhibition at three venues in Torfaen

An exhibition celebrating the history of the Windrush generation in Wales has come to Torfaen.

The Windrush Cymru Exhibition charts the achievements and contributions of those who settled in the UK from the Caribbean and their descendants.Including former professional footballer Sean Wharton, from Cwmbran, whose parents travelled to Britain from St Kitts.

He said: “I have a strong sense of belonging to the Caribbean and a strong sense of belonging to Wales at the same time. I don’t think we should underestimate the hard work our elders did in order for us to do what we’re doing today. Even though it wasn’t easy, the Windrush Generation made a significant impact on our communities and society.”

Today, marks the 75th anniversary since the first passengers arrived on Empire Windrush – an anniversary known as National Windrush Day.

Council Leader Anthony Hunt said: “The stories and photographs featured in this exhibition really bring home the immense contribution the Windrush Generation has made to Welsh life and culture over the years.

“Many came here to work in our hospitals and health service and we owe them and their families a huge amount of gratitude.”

The Race Council Cymru exhibition, funded by the National Lottery, features the stories of more than 40 people from the Windrush Generation.

It is on display for a couple of months across five venues:

* Pontypool Civic Centre

* Pontypool Indoor Market

* Blaenavon, Cwmbran and Pontypool libraries

People are invited to visit the Windrush exhibition during each venue’s opening hours. Tours will be arranged for local schools and community groups.
