Cwmbran and District Ex-Services Association (CADESA) held a service on Thursday 6 June 2024 to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
It was held outside the TA Centre on Ty-Coch Way.
Lord Murphy gave the opening address followed by Reverend Frieda Evans who led prayers.
Andy Hobin read the ‘Paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm the mission to Seafarers’.
Alan Terry read ‘In Flanders Field’ and Rhiannon Walding read ‘High Flight’.
Captain Steve Smith, 100 Field Squadron (Militia) read out the names of the men from Torfaen who died from ‘D-Day to the liberation of the City of Caen which was the main British objective.’
Ian McGregor read the Exhortation. Thomas Pugh played the Last Post and Iain McGregor played Kohima.
Gordon Williams, Chair of the Royal Naval Association in South Wales, paid tribute to Reg Hann, a D-Day veteran who passed away at the age of 100 in April 2024. Mr Hann’s daughter Katherine and grandson, Alexander, were among the guests.
Steve Parker from Piping Hot played the pipes throughout the service.
In the service programme CADESA also thanked Stuart Cameron and said he was a ‘staunch supporter and friend of CADESA who researched and collated the names of the local veterans we are remembering today.’
Other guests included Cllr Anthony Hunt, leader of Torfaen Council, Cllr Chris Morgan, chair of Cwmbran Community Council, and Nick Thomas-Symonds, parliamentary candidate for Torfaen.
