Cwmbran Boxing Club has revamped its women’s changing room to help attract more women and girls into the sport
The new lockers, toilet, shower, ceiling and full decoration were funded thanks to grants from Cwmbran Community Council and The Cwmbran Trust [formerly the Girling (Cwmbran) Trust].
Cllr Gareth Lloyd-Tolman, chair of Cwmbran Community Council, said, “I am delighted that the Council was able to support the refurbishment of the women’s changing rooms, encouraging access to the boxing club for all. It’s a well-established and successful venue and long may it provide sporting and fitness opportunities for Cwmbran.”
Holly Hinchey, club development officer for Torfaen Health, Sports and Fitness, met Keith Jefferies, head coach at the club, last Wednesday (5 August 2026) to check out the work.
Plans are underway to install a new ceiling and carry out painting and decoration in the men’s changing room thanks to the grants.
‘Superb’
Holly said: “Keith has always been brilliant at making something out of nothing. It looks superb in here.
“Any female boxer that wants to come to the club will be shown that they’re welcomed into the club and they’re not just a sideline, which is what sometimes happens and you feel when you go into a club that’s traditionally boys.
“The club wants to welcome and bring females into this environment, and I think they’ll feel fully welcomed into the club. Keith is very good at getting people active and moving, whether it’s for fitness or social or because they just want to have a go at boxing.
“I think they would be very welcome to come here and absolutely love it.”
Keith Jefferies, head coach at the Cwmbran Boxing Club, said: “Without them we couldn’t have done this. I’ve been waiting for about 20 years, but just haven’t had the money. Without these people, we’d have nothing. It’s as simple as that.”
