A 20-minute visit to Pontypool Active Living Centre gave me a fascinating insight into my health and fitness. When I spotted that Torfaen Leisure Trust was offering free health MOTs I booked a slot.
Owen Thomas, from Torfaen Leisure Trust, met me at reception and took me around the centre before I jumped on the special InBody 270 machine. The last year has seen all of the trust’s venues make changes so customers can exercise safely. They are using new rooms for extra space and the machines have been spaced out.
Customers book a one-hour slot to use the gym. Then staff carry out a 15-minute cleaning session before the next group of customers are allowed in for their hour.
The health MOT machine
The Inbody 270 machine is a brilliant piece of kit. You don’t have to be a member of the Trust to use it. It’s so simple. I was asked to take off my shoes and socks and get on the metal ‘footprints’.
You stand tall and relax before grabbing hold of the electrodes. The sensors do their magic for 15 seconds and a few minutes later you are given a print-out packed with facts to help you on your journey to a healthier life.
Owen told me that this information is a great starter point for people to set goals and motivate themselves. You can book a follow-up appointment so you can track your progress.
You walk away with over 20 bits of information. It may sound overwhelming but one of the team will give you an explanation of what it all means so don’t worry.
The results include:
- Weight
- Muscle to Fat Ratio
- Total Water
- Obesity Analysis
- Segmented Lean Analysis
- Visceral Fat Analysis
- Body Composition History
- Waist to Hip Ratio
- Calorie Expenditure on Exercise
- InBody Score
A spokesperson for the trust said: “The free MOT will help you find out your current health levels. Giving you a starting point to start you on your fitness journey. Torfaen Leisure Trust aim is to improve the health of our community and provide the support and guidance to get everyone active.
“Our brand new InBody composition analysis machine will see how your body is functioning for your age group.
“It will help highlight and predict any potential health limitations or issues now or in later life. Our professional fitness team will provide you with nutrition guides, exercise and lifestyle advice, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.”
The machine is in Pontypool Active Living Centre but there are plans to take it to other sites and visits to local businesses and events.
