Pupils at Pontnewydd Primary School have planted a ‘tiny forest’ in memory of their late headteacher, Kerry Waters, who passed away in October.
The area in the school’s grounds will be known as ‘Water’s Wood’. Earlier this month, pupils, staff and members of the community planted a variety of native trees.
‘Waters Woods’ received a £29,030 grant from the Tiny Forests scheme. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with the Welsh Government.
The Coetiroedd Bach Grant is supporting the creation of ‘Tiny Forests’ between April 2023 and the end of March 2025. It is part of the National Forest for Wales programme.
Samantha Rowland, deputy headteaher at Pontnewydd Primary said: “We are thrilled to have received this grant. Thanks to this support from the Welsh Government via the Coetiroedd Bach (Tiny Forests) scheme, we can now develop our plans to enhance our outdoor environment and contribute to creating a sustainable environment and vital conservation work”.
Leanne Morgan, chair of the Friends of Pontnewydd Park, said: “It’s a privilege to be asked to contribute to the tiny wood, such a wonderful and lasting way to commemorate Mr Waters whilst creating a space for ecology and wildlife at the school. The school staff and children have really done a marvellous job.”
