The view from Town Bridge in Bradford-on-Avon

Mooch? The Cambridge Dictionary tells me this means: “To walk or do things slowly and without much purpose.”

I’m not sure this is what I did recently, but it just felt like I was ‘mooching’. A couple of weekends ago, we drove 50.2 miles (62 mins) to Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire.

A quick ‘mooch’ on the Trainline website tells me you can get here in one hour 24 mins by train from the best town in Wales (Cwmbran).

It’s a lovely place with a canal (the Kennet & Avon), a river (the River Avon), old buildings, shops (lots of second-hand and charity shops), cafes, and pubs. It’s a very ‘moochable’ (my word) place and if you fancy exploring somewhere not too near but not too far from Cwmbran, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Two highlights were the Secret Garden Coffee Shop for an out-of-this-world cream tea and the Castle Inn, where I enjoyed a cracking pint and friendly conversation with one of the locals.

The gold postbox was presented to Bradford-on-Avon following Ed McKeever London 2012 Olympic gold win

And it’s got a golden letterbox to mark the Olympic gold won by resident Ed McKeever, who took the top spot in the K1 200m kayak category at London 2012 games.

The London 2012 games were one of the best periods of my life. If you want to hear a funny story about the men’s 100m final (won by Usain Bolt) and red wine just ask me.
