A Cwmbran teenager has returned from America with two trophies after competing in an international karate tournament.

Morgan Mates, 17, flew to New York two weeks ago to fight in the United States International Kyokushin Championships.

The event attracts competitors from across the world. She took second place in the IFK division and third place in the Open Hand division.

The first dan black belt has been a member of Cwmbran Kyokushinkai Karate since was four-years-old.

Proud dad Gareth Mates said: “Thanks to everyone who supported her New York trip.

“Special thanks to her Cwmbrân dojo and squad coaches for their guidance, training, and this amazing opportunity.”
