Members of Avant Dance Academy performed last weekend at the Congress Theatre. This wonderful photo was taken last Friday by Ian Gilbert from Emotion Picture Photography at the technical rehearsal.

The academy has 61 dancers aged from three to “40s”.

Ros Gwynn, from the academy, said: “This show is all new numbers. It’s based on great movies and great stage shows. There is quite a variety of music from modern through to quite old stuff. One of the subjects that ABD teach is called ‘soft musical comedy’.

‘It’s something quite lyrical but it’s quite specific to an era, so it’s got to be music from the 30s and 40s and that’s one of Sarah’s (Delaney) favourite subject. So you’ll see ‘enchanted evening’ which falls into that era.”

Set up in 2012

She thanked Padre Pio Roman Catholic Primary School for the use of their hall for the dress rehearse

She said: “We had four rehearsals there and they’ve been excellent. Mr Welsh, the headmaster has been amazing.”

The academy was set up in 2012 and this is their seventh show at the venue. In the last year, members have visited residential homes including Thomas Gabrielle Nursing Homes in Old Cwmbran and the Arthur Jenkins Care Home to perform for residents.

Every year, they hold an awards event to recognise their members in categories including “hardest worker” and “most improved”.

They practice at Pontypool Masonic Centre and the Ebenezer Centre on Hanbury Road
