Five primary schools in the catchment area of Cwmbran High School took part in the first football cluster league.
Pupils from Blenheim Road, Coed Eva, Nant Celyn, Woodlands and Greenmeadow played matches against each other throughout the current school year.
Teachers organised eight matches, one home and one away, before the top two teams met in a final at Cwmbran Stadium.
Blenheim Road and Coed Eva played in the final last Thursday.
TV and radio Football broadcaster and former Wales international Danny Gabbidon presented the winners’ shield and medals.
Jean Reardon, teacher at Blenheim Road and transition lead, said: “The unusual thing about it was that in the final we were up against Coed Eva Primary, the other half of our Federation.
“Children from both schools walked down to support the teams. Families of the footballers were also there.
“Both teams played extremely well. It was definitely a nailbiter. The children were buzzing.”
Lee Gwilliam, teacher at Coed Eva, said: “The final of the Cwmbran cluster league was a well fought game, both teams struggling to keep the ball, with plenty of chances at both ends. It was supported by Jacob Guy, from Torfaen Council’s sports development team.”
He said Coed Eva went 1-0 with a goal from Kye Jones. They stayed in the lead with a “world class save” from goalkeeper Flynn Underwood keeping them ahead.
Teddy Thacker equalised after breaking through the Coed Eva defence. Then with two minutes to go with the teams at 1-1 Thacker stepped up to take a free kick from 15 yards out.
He gets it into the box, and it ends up in the goal to give Blenheim a 2-1 win.
