A Cwmbran school’s football team has reached the final of the Welsh Cup.
Cwmbran High School’s year nine boys’ team entered the Welsh Schools FA tournament.
Headteacher Matt Sims, said: “A fantastic achievement from a brilliant group of sportmen.
“They have brought a sense of pride to the school, their families and our community.”
The side played their first game last September, beating local rivals Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw 5-2.
In the next round they beat Caldicot 3-1. The boys drew their next two matches at the final whistle but won both on penalties knocking out Newport’s St Joseph’s RC High School and Caerphilly’s Islwyn High School.
That set them up for the quarter finals where they won 5-1 against Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School.
The team travelled to Penybont FC yesterday (Thursday 3 April 2025) to take on Cardiff’s St Teilo’s Church in Wales High School.
The Cwmbran-side came away 4-3 winners. The main photo shows the team after their victory with their supporters who made the trip to the ground near Bridgend cheering in the background.
When is the boys’ year nine Welsh Cup football final?
The boys play in the final on Saturday 10 May at Park Hall, the home of The New Saints FC in Oswestry. Kick off 10.15am. They’re taking Flint High School.
