The Civic Centre in Pontypool Credit: LDRS

A DEADLINE for nomination papers to be returned to fill two vacancies following the resignation of one councillor has been set.

The vacancies have been created following the resignation, in November, of Labour councillor Sue Malson who represented the Trevethin and Penygarn ward on Torfaen Borough Council and the New Inn Upper ward on Pontypool Community Council.

Nomination papers can be hand delivered to the returning officer at Torfaen Civic Centre in Pontypool between 9.30am and 12 noon or from 1pm to 4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays or by 4pm on Fridays, with the deadline of Friday, January 17.

If contested elections are to be held they will take place on Thursday, February 13.

Nomination papers can be obtained from the Civic Centre, between the same times, or can also be downloaded from Electoral Commission website.

Anyone aged 16 or over is entitled to vote in council elections and applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 12 midnight on Tuesday January 28. Applications can be made online: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Labour holds a majority of 17 on Torfaen Borough Council and the 12 opposition councillors are comprised of two independent groups and a three member Reform UK group.
