a band play a gig in a music store- the lead singer is holding a guitar
Kalamity's gig in Cwmbran HMV

A woman who bought band posters in HMV Cwmbran as a teenager returned to perform live to a packed-out store.

Kalamity told stories through their music, alongside incredible vocals, drums and guitar solos. It created an eerie vintage sound perfect for fans of bands such as System of a Down and Muse.

Kaylene Cawkwell, the band’s lead singer, was a pupil at Croesyceiliog School and spoke after the 30-minute free gig.

She said: “It feels vintage. That’s one of the words I can feel. It’s weird coming in here to buy posters as a teenager, and now playing HMV in front of wonderful people, familiar faces, new faces, it just feels right. It feels perfect.”

Kaylene met her bandmates Luke Clemenger and Chris Seldon while studying at university before forming the three-piece alt-rock and hard rock band.

Their music can be found on Spotify. Kaylene said: “I would recommend them [their tracks] all if I could. The main song I would recommend is ‘The Sailors Prayer’ because it makes you feel good. It’s a bit dark, but it makes you feel great. It’s a sea shanty. Who doesn’t love a sea shanty?”

The band performed ‘The Sailors Prayer’ at the store in the town centre with huge energy and even got the crowd singing along.

Kaylene said they’d just finished a leg of gigs around the UK and are currently in the process of booking more for the future.

She said: “So on that note, if anyone is looking for support bands, do let us know because we are getting ourselves within the scene.”
