Matthew Jones is the Plaid Cymru candidate for Torfaen in the 2024 general election.

He explains why he is standing and why he thinks you should vote for him.

Matthew said: “It is a time of huge change, and we desperately need it. The Conservatives have crashed the economy and made life harder for us all. We need a real, positive change in Westminster, but we know that voting Labour doesn’t mean change for us in Torfaen. Labour are taking us for granted.

“My name is Matthew Jones, I’m a Torfaen man through and through. I’m proud to have been born and raised and live here, and I’m proud to be your Plaid Cymru candidate in Torfaen.

“My view of the world has been shaped by this community – of fairness and equality, of respect, of our duty to care for those who need it. It’s led me to see that we deserve better from the Westminster parties.

“The cost of living crisis has been disastrous, and so many people are having to use food banks – even nurses. This is disgraceful. But Labour are committed to the same spending cuts as the Tories. Keir Starmer even banned Labour MPs from attending picket lines to support striking nurses and teachers.

“I’m building a coalition of people in all parts of Torfaen who want a positive change for our area, however you’ve voted before, whether or not you’ve even voted before. This election, vote for a positive change for Torfaen.

“Being elected to serve our constituency would be the honour of a lifetime, and I will work every day to make life easier and fairer every person, and our community. I will also stand up for what is right in Westminster – to tackle climate change and call for peace.

“Only Plaid Cymru is offering hope, ambition and fairness for Torfaen and for Wales. We need an MP who will put Torfaen on the radar in Westminster, and stand up for what is right.

“With your support, I’ll do that every day.

“Here’s my plan for Torfaen.”

  • Fair funding for ALL of Torfaen

Westminster has not given Wales our fair share – but Labour in Torfaen has not spread investment around the whole of the county. I will work to ensure a fair funding model that will support public services in Torfaen and properly regenerate all our towns and villages.

  • A healthier Torfaen

Cancer diagnosis, mental health services, ambulances and waiting times – all of these are struggling due to a lack of long-term planning by the Labour Government. I will fight for our NHS services and continue to call for a Welsh Covid Inquiry.

  • Financial Security for All

28% of children in Wales live in poverty and it’s only getting worse with the huge rise in bills, mortgages and rents. I will work constantly to end poverty in Torfaen and for support to be there for those who need it.

  • A future for young people in Torfaen

I will support green, modern jobs that are fit for the future as well as the many small businesses in Torfaen that give us our identity and improve our environment. I will also help our young people access modern, suitable and affordable homes in our area, rather than having to move away, as well as improve public transport.

There are eight candidates standing for Torfaen in the 2024 General Election.
