Cwmbran’s Nev Bonfield is preparing for his next bodybuilding competition and invited me to Goode’s Fitness in Croesyceiliog for a training session.
The 33 year-old, who is registered blind, was born with two fingers on each hand but has adapted some judo belts into super-strong wrist straps so he can lift weights.
He ran for Wales in the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games but a hamstring injury saw him change sports to bodybuilding.
In the gym with Nev Bonfield
I tried out his wrist straps on the pull-up bar during the training session. It means he can lift more weights without the strain on his fingers. Watch him explain how he uses them in this video.
Sponsor Nev
Could you or your business sponsor Nev or offer him a discount? His strict diet and supplements are expensive and he would appreciate any support you could offer to help him compete. A future competition is in Colchester but the cost of the train, two nights in a hotel and entry fee are stopping him from entering.
Call Nev on 07584 626 416 or like his Facebook page.
Nev’s training day
He eats six meals a day and does a 45-minute brisk walk as soon as he wakes up. All his meals are weighed to make sure he gets the right amount of proteins and carbohydrates. Once a week he travels to train in Aberdare with bodybuilding champion James Llewellin.
