A Torfaen bowling club is appealing for new members with the club captain saying many people don’t know where it is.

PILCS Bowling Club is tucked away behind PILCS social club in New Inn, but can’t be seen from the main road.

Dave Mason, club captain, said: “We were Pontyfelin, but now we’re PILCS. 1961 the club was founded. It’s had many a name over the years. I can’t remember them all.

“I’ve been here three years, become captain two years ago. I’m enjoying it. We play on a Wednesday in the league, and we play on a Saturday in the league.

“We train on the Tuesday at about 3.30pm to about 7pm on the green here just behind Pilkington’s Club in New Road, New Inn.

“We’re a good bunch of lads. We have a good bunch of boys who play quite regularly.

‘New members’

“We need new members. Members are a lifeline to us. We’ve got about 26, but obviously with holidays and sickness and things like that, we struggle to put 16 out most weeks, so we could do with new members.

“Anyone is welcome to pop along and see us.

“It is hidden away. We’ve had people come to play us and drive past us and go to Panteg House or Panteg Park. They’ve come here and gone, we didn’t realise this club was here’.

“They say it’s an old man’s game, but I tell you what, you’ll be surprised how many times you play, and some of them are 16 and 17. We’ve got Alfie, 19, a good little player, but we could do with more to bring on the younger section.

“It’s easy to pick up. New players don’t need to be introduced, just turn up.”
