The Congress Youth Theatre is putting on Urinetown. It’s the first time the musical has been produced in Wales.

The show is a musical comedy satire about hope, greed and love. It’s been on Broadway (2001) and the West End (2014).

Rachel Hamilton, director of Congress Youth Theatre, said: “The Congress Youth Theatre is excited to premiere the musical Urinetown. This show has never been produced in Wales before and we are beyond excited to be the first to do it here in Cwmbran. After the success of our last performances: Grease and Joseph, it was time to take on a bigger challenge.”

Urinetown was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning for best book, score, and direction. It also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical. Audiences should not let the title fool them it’s not all toilet humour, it is a light look at how greed and corruption on the highest levels impact us all.

In a Gotham like city, a water shortage caused by a 20 year drought, has led to a government enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public regulated amenities, a company profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. A hero has had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom.

This show features Cwmbran’s talented and dedicated performing arts students working in conjunction with a professional team. Urinetown opens Wednesday 16 March  and runs through to Saturday 19 March.
