Twelve-year-old Leo Whitcut was awarded the ‘best new player of the season’ award this evening by his teammates at the Waterloo pub in Two Locks.
The Cwmbran High School pupil started playing with his dad a couple of years ago and now plays in the pub’s league team.
Before their final summer season league match (against Pontypool Cons) got underway, he was called to the table by Paul Augustus, pub landlord, who said: “Since you’ve been coming here and you’ve been yay high’ [holds hand by waist] and you were just overlooking the table…we’ve noticed that you’ve come on leaps and bounds.
“And you’re an awesome player to make it onto the team… you’ve done us all really, really proud. You’re a good kid. Stick to it. You’ve got to stick with us. We don’t want to lose you. So on behalf of me, Vicky, and the pool teams, we want to present you with this.”
Leo told Cwmbran Life his favourite thing about playing pool was “potting balls” but added that a pool league match was “quite hard”.
Kevin Wall, his dad, joked: “One day he’ll be as good as me, won’t you? He’s doing really well. I will say all the locals here have really helped him loads. I mean that’s the sort of pub it is. All the regulars here have really encouraged him. Fingers crossed, he should carry on going.”
