The organisers of the annual Good Friday walk from Cwmbran to Twmbarlwm have called it off due to the cold weather.

Richard Davies, from Ancient Cwmbran, said: “After much thought and consideration we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Good Friday walk to Twmbarlwm.

“Even though the weather outlook is improving at lower levels, conditions at the summit of Twmbarlwm will be very poor with a wind chill of -10 degrees centigrade with the winds gusting up to 50 mph .

“The Twmbarlwm Society are going ahead with the walk from their side of the mountain ( which is more sheltered ) so if you wish you could join them on their walk.

“We, on the other hand, have a longer and far more difficult walk from our side of the mountain, our access points to the moorland are more difficult and flooded area’s are now frozen and treacherous.

“There is also a stretch of our walk that is 1 mile long with no vehicle access , so even a minor injury which prevents mobility could become life threatening in subzero conditions.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused , but I’m sure you will appreciate that this has been a difficult decision, the safety of our members being  paramount .

“We hope to see you all safe and well at our next event.”
