A portrait of a Cwmbran soldier who was killed while serving in Afghanistan has been unveiled in the civic centre in Pontypool.
Corporal Michael Thacker died on 1 June 2012, aged 27, while serving with the 1st Royal Welch Fusiliers in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The portrait is now displayed alongside the portrait of Private James Prosser, which was unveiled in July. Both portraits were painted by military veteran Kev Wills.
His mum, Alison, and two of his brothers attended the unveiling event yesterday with friends and local military representatives.
Councillor Gaynor James, Torfaen Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “This is a visible symbol of our commitment to the local people who serve and have served in our armed forces. We shall never forget them.”
Councillor Anthony Hunt, leader of the council, said: “This portrait is the next step to commemorate our local armed forces heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They will always be remembered in Torfaen.”
