A CRAFTSMAN recognised in the Honours list has said he’s since received congratulations from as far as Australia and Italy.

Peter Bradwick was named an MBE in the New Year’s Honours for his services to the craft of wood turning.

He is a founder member of Cwmbran’s Crow Valley Woodturners club which gives people the opportunity to try the craft of turning and shaping wood to create round objects from bowls to candlesticks.

The retired further education carpentry and joinery lecturer is also a member of Worshipful Company of Turners which is dedicated to the craft of wood turning using a lathe and Mr Bradwick believes his volunteering with livery company that traces its history back to the 12 century led to him being recognised in the honours.

“I’ve written two qualifications in wood turning, a diploma and a certificate, and though I’m not too sure who put my name forward I think it came from that avenue,” said the resident of Llantarnam, Cwmbran.

“I go around the country training people up. Number one is to train the youth to learn the craft and also teach tutors to pass on their skills to others.”

Mr Bradwick taught at the Cardiff and Vale College’s, Barry campus until 2020 but the 72-year-old said of retirement “you wouldn’t think it” due to his continued volunteering commitments in passing on the skills of wood craft.

He formed the Crow Valley Woodturners group, in 2006, and it still meets every Thursday at the Croesyceiliog Community Education Centre with Mr Bradwick stating new members are always welcome.

He has been married to wife Susan for 20 years and between them the couple have four children and seven grandchildren.

Of his recognition in the honours Mr Bradwick said: “I was surprised and honoured.

“I don’t do this work for the accolades and I sort of keep things quiet but I’m really honoured as I’m only doing the things I’m passionate about.

“People have rang to congratulate from Italy and Australia, an ex colleague from the college had seen it online.”
